STRUCTURAL PACKAGING DESIGN | BRAND EQUITY

SITUATION:

Coca-Cola, as the official hydrator of the Argentinean national football team during the 2014 World Cup, collaborated with Product Ventures to revamp the structural design of the Powerade® brand. The objective was to create an iconic structural aesthetic that embodied qualities such as strength, endurance, and intensity, aligning with the Powerade brand’s image.

CHALLENGE:

The challenge was to reimagine the structural design of the existing Powerade bottle to reflect the attributes of strength and vitality while also addressing the practical aspects of fluid intake. This involved designing a bottle that could effectively convey the essence of Powerade’s branding and its new replenishing formula, ION4. The bottle design needed to be captivating and functional, providing consumers with a powerful and dynamic visual experience.

APPROACH:

Product Ventures took on the task of developing the structural design for the Powerade brand’s new bottle, codenamed “Gladiator.” The approach focused on creating a bottle with a structural aesthetic that signified strength, endurance, and intensity. The bottle design featured a bold chest plate-like structure that conveyed a sense of robustness and vitality.

In addition to its visually striking design, the “Gladiator” bottle was designed with a wide and rigid mouth, enhancing the practicality of fluid intake for the end-consumer. This feature was essential for athletes and consumers who needed quick hydration before, during, and after sports activities. The structural redesign aimed to not only capture the essence of Powerade but also to enhance the user experience through improved ergonomics.

RESULT:

The result of this successful collaboration was the “Gladiator” bottle, a structural redesign that successfully captured the attributes of strength and vitality associated with the Powerade brand. The bold and captivating design with its chest plate-like structure conveyed a sense of robustness and endurance. Simultaneously, the practical and ergonomic design of the wide and rigid mouth facilitated proper fluid intake, making it a convenient choice for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike. The “Gladiator” bottle effectively represented the Powerade brand during the 2014 World Cup, combining aesthetics and functionality to create an iconic packaging design solution.
